Aims:The importan t role of raised serum gam ma-glut amyl tran sferase (GG T) for predi cting diabe tes mellitus and insulinresist ance is clear; how ever re lations hip between incr eased level of GGT and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is now hypothe sized. We aime d to show the imp ortanc e of GGT measur ement in diagnosi s of IGT.
Material s and methods: Two hund red person s were rando mly sele cted from the Kerm an Coro nary Arte ry Disease RiskStudy (KERC ADRS), as a population -based stud y. All pa rticipant s un derwen t GGT analy sis test, besi des meas uring risk fact ors and compon ents of metabol ic syndr ome (MS).
Results: The increa se in GGT was corr elate d with increased prev alence of IGT and MS and its differen t compon ents. Inmultivar iable ana lysis, a high GGT wa s positive ly associa ted with the prese nce of IGT after adju stment for age, sex and MSdiagnost ic criter ia. The area un der curve (AUC) fo r GGT wa s 0.722 for discrimi nating IGT from nor mal condit ion, and 0.847for disc rimina ting MS from nor mal status . In ROC curve analy sis, the optim al cut-off value for GGT to discrimi nate IGT fromnormal condit ion was 20.5 IU with the sen sitivity of 71.6 % and the s pecificit y of 66.1%. The best cuto ff value for GGT to di scrimi nate MS from normal condit ion wa s also 16.5 IU with th e sen sitivity and spec ificity of 78.4 % and 78.4%, respect ively.
Conclusion: The meas uring GGT can be a sen sitive method for early diag nosis and predi cting IGT and MS from norm al cond ition. Because this diagnost ic test is a low-c ost, highly sen sitive, accurate and frequentlyuse dlabor atorytest, itsmeas urementisre commende dasausefulmar kerofbo thIGTandMS.
